How Can I Protect My Kids From a Sunburn?
The summer season is a fun one for your children. School is out, the weather is beautiful and there are so many outdoor activities for them to enjoy.
While you are busy being the chauffeur around town, don’t forget to pack the things your children need to avoid getting burned!
Getting sunburnt at any age can be painful and damage your skin, but it is especially important to avoid sunburns as a child as your children’s skin is really sensitive and the effects can be long-lasting.
Our AFC Urgent Care Indian Trail team explains the importance of protecting your children’s skin below, so read on to learn more.
Why Is the Sun Dangerous?
The sun is an essential part of human life! We need it for a variety of important things, but we also have to respect it. The sun’s rays contain UV, or ultraviolet, light that is harmful to our skin. The longer you spend in the sun without protection, the more the UV light impacts your exposed skin.
Over time, your skin can react to this light and cause it to become red, inflamed and painful. A sunburn is the negative reaction from UV light exposure that can linger and be uncomfortable for a day or two. Even though the redness will eventually fade, your skin cells remain permanently damaged from the light. Repeated exposure and burns can lead to premature wrinkles, sun spots and even skin cancer.
Managing Your Children’s Sun Exposure
- Avoid being outside when the sun is the strongest.
- Take frequent breaks in the shade.
- Encourage sunglasses and protective clothing.
- Move outdoor activities into a shady spot.
How Can I Protect My Children’s Skin?
Start by finding a good sunscreen that works for you and your family. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply it every two hours or more often if your kids are sweating or playing in water.
In addition, offer hats and sunglasses during any outdoor activity. This added layer of protection can protect the most sensitive parts of their skin. Also, a lot of kids’ clothing now is created with UV light-blocking technology that can help filter out the dangerous rays from reaching your kid’s skin.
Relieving a Painful Sunburn
- Apply a cool compress to the area.
- Offer OTC medication for lingering pain.
- Apply aloe vera or a moisturizing lotion.
- Encourage hydration by offering water often.
