Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is a respiratory infection that can cause breathing troubles and can be really dangerous for certain populations.

Older adults and small children are disproportionately affected by RSV, and they make up the vast majority of severe cases and hospitalizations across the country.

How Does RSV Spread?

RSV is incredibly contagious and can spread either through airborne droplets, like an uncovered cough or sneeze, or from direct contact. This is why many providers and medical staff will encourage you to limit who is allowed to hug and kiss your newborn baby. A single loving kiss to the face or forehead could cause your baby to become really sick.

If you do end up contracting RSV, symptoms will usually start one to two days after exposure and will resemble minor cold-like symptoms. While it may not seem like a big deal at the beginning, RSV symptoms can progress rapidly and lead to respiratory distress.

Can I Cure RSV Fast?

Since RSV is a viral infection, there is unfortunately no quick fix for this illness. It will just have to run its course and cause you to feel pretty miserable for a few days. You should still come see us for a rapid test to confirm your diagnosis! Knowing what you have can help you pinpoint any warning signs that could lead to a more serious infection.

Thanks to the advancements of science, there is now an RSV vaccine on the market that is available for individuals aged 60 and older. It has been approved and proven to help reduce the risk of contracting RSV significantly. If you or a loved one qualifies, speak with your provider about getting this vaccine.
