What Are Some Ways to Stay Healthy Over the Holidays?

No matter what holidays you celebrate or observe, this time of year is wonderful for so many reasons! We all love the increased time spent with family, exchanging gifts, eating delicious food and partaking in family traditions.

Since this time of year is so fun, it is natural to want to avoid getting sick in any capacity right now. You don’t want to be the only one to miss out on your activities because of a pesky illness.

Our AFC Urgent Care Indian Trail team wants you to stay healthy all season, so read on to learn some easy ways to avoid getting sick.

Are Infections More Common in the Fall?

You can get sick at any point in the year, but illness is more common in the fall and winter seasons because we are all spending so much more time close together inside. This is why taking care of yourself at this time of year is vital! Getting rundown or experiencing high levels of stress can make it harder for your body to fight off infection.

Wash your hands often and avoid touching your face, and really consider which large events you attend. Sick individuals at your office holiday party or at a gift exchange could cause you to become sick and miss out on something else later in the week. You should also try to get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night and eat a healthy diet. All of this comes together to support your immune system and help you ward off illness.

Health Tips for the Season

  • Bundle up when it is cold outside.
  • Get your flu vaccine.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Wear your seatbelt while traveling.

Should I Be Worried About Foodborne Illnesses?

With the increase of family-style meals and large gatherings with a ton of delicious food, the chance that you get sick from a foodborne illness increases slightly at this time of year. Bacteria can grow quickly on food that is left out too long, and that can be harder to control when there is so much going on.

Always prepare meat to its recommended temperature based on FDA recommendations, and serve your food immediately when it is done. Have a family member help you store leftovers promptly and wipe down the table. If you have had any perishable food sit out for longer than two hours, toss it just to be on the safe side.

Additional Kitchen Safety Tips

  • Use designated cutting boards for raw meat and produce.
  • Wash hands before handling food.
  • Don’t cook for others when you aren’t feeling well.
  • Understand specific allergies or dietary restrictions for those attending your party.
